Preface This material has been gathered and assembled in response to a request by the Jenner/Iddesleigh Heritage Society of Southern Alberta. They asked for information and stories about the Stapleton family and the Lone Star Ranch at Jenner,Alberta.Jenner is in the short grass - dryland country of southeastern Alberta. It is just east of Dinosaur Provincial Park on the Red Deer River, north of Brooks. The whole project started with a call from Roy Banta of Crossfield, Alberta who, upon seeing a request for information on the Jenner area, looked in the telephone book and called the first M. J. Stapleton that he found. The purpose of the call was to find a Stapleton that might be interested in hearing stories about the Lone Star Ranch from a man who was there. He knew Michael James Stapleton and his son, Murray Michael Kerwin Stapleton. Roy Banta and Murray were about the same age and worked together on the ranch. Roy took quite an interest in the ranch and his father had worked in a sheep raising partnership with The Chief - Michael J. Stapleton Sr. I told Roy that I was the first son of the first son of the first son of "The Chief" of the Lone Star Ranch. When I received the call from Roy Banta on the evening of March 30,1989, I thought that this would be a great opportunity to find out more about the family history and add to what I already knew about the ranch.
Roy and I got together several times – the contact list grew and the information came in until June 27th,(1989) when Margaret (Stapleton) Dickie flew here from Kelowna with albums full of pictures, letters and memorabilia. Colleen Irwin and Marg and I went to the original site of the Lone Star. The result of which was this compilation of some of the information and publication of a story on the Stapletons and the Lone Star Ranch. |
